Contract: Freelance (September – October 2026)
Location: Hybrid (working from home with some in-person meetings in London)
Fixed Fee: £10,000 for all design development and delivery

The Project

For over 700 years, the people of Haringey have stood at the forefront of social, political and cultural movements, challenging the status quo and rallying for justice. From the legacy of figures such as Bernie Grant – one of the first Black leaders of a Council and a pioneering MP – to the countless communities who have united in solidarity and resistance, rebellion has always been part of the borough’s story. Issues we now recognise as fundamental: education and opportunity for all, racial equality, LGBTQI+ rights, anti-ageism and disability access – were once viewed as radical and anti-establishment. Collective action behind these movements has long had a home in Haringey’s rebel borough.

Over 600 of Haringey’s rebel moments have been captured in a one-hundred page Rebel Timeline curated by Deborah Hedgecock, the curator of Bruce Castle Museum & Archive. We want to celebrate these stories creatively and make Haringey’s history of activism, resistance and collective action visible for everyone.

The Role

We are looking for a bold and exceptional designer to bring our Rebel Timeline to life through engaging visual design and digital concept. Working closely with the London Borough of Culture team and Bruce Castle Museum & Archive, you will transform our existing text-based document into an imaginative and engaging digital timeline that visually celebrates Haringey's history of activism, creativity and social change.

The successful designer will be responsible for developing the visual identity of the timeline and producing a range of engaging assets that are accessible, visually consistent and aligned with the project's creative direction. This is an opportunity to shape a flagship piece of history, heritage and legacy that will live well beyond 2027.

Main Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop the visual identity of the Rebel Timeline.
  • Transform an existing text-based timeline into an engaging digital, visual and interactive format.
  • Create layouts, illustrations, graphics, texts and supporting visual assets that communicate complex historical information clearly and creatively.
  • Work collaboratively with the London Borough of Culture team and Bruce Castle Museum & Archive to ensure historical accuracy and consistency.
  • Develop design concepts that align with visual guidelines while contributing fresh creative ideas.
  • Prepare artwork for both digital and potential print outputs.
  • Produce assets that are accessible, responsive and suitable for a range of audiences.
  • Incorporate feedback from project partners throughout the design process.
  • Manage your own workload and deliver agreed milestones within project deadlines.

About You

You are an artist, creative or a designer with 3+ years of demonstrable experience in graphic design or illustration, visual storytelling, data visualisation, or a related discipline. You have a strong eye for typography, layout and visual communication, with the ability to transform research and written content into engaging, accessible visual storytelling.

We are looking for someone who shares our ambition to make Haringey's stories of activism, resistance and social change visible and inspiring through thoughtful, inclusive design. Your work demonstrates creativity, imagination and sensitivity to historical narratives, creating engaging visual designs that celebrate Haringey’s rich history and connect with a varied audience.

You will also have:

  • Strong professional experience in design across a range of digital outputs.
  • Experience creating digital publications, exhibitions, timelines, interpretive graphics or other visual communication materials.
  • Experience designing content for web-based platforms, with an understanding of responsive design and the integration of interactive visual content into websites.
  • The ability to use appropriate professional design tools and workflows to produce high-quality creative work.
  • The ability to work confidently both independently and collaboratively, taking ownership of creative projects and delivering high-quality work to agreed deadlines.

Additional skills and experience that would support this role include:

  • Experience working with museums, archives, cultural organisations or heritage projects.
  • Experience in illustration and/or basic animation.

We particularly welcome applications from people who live in Haringey and from people with lived experience of one or more of our priority communities, including people who identify as Latine; Black British, African or Caribbean; of Turkish and/or Kurdish heritage; LGBTQI+; and disabled.
