Help us uncover the incredible stories that make Haringey’s community unique.
We want to amplify the voices of local residents, and individuals across Haringey’s communities who have made a difference, challenged expectations, supported others, or shown resilience in everyday life: from the quiet to the loud rebel, from the unknown to the celebrated rebel.
Join us in finding Haringey's incredible stories from local people and residents that reflect our ‘Rebel Borough’. These stories will form part of an internationally acclaimed storytelling project that centres empathy as part of our London Borough of Culture 2027 programme.
Full details and name of the project will be announced in early 2027.
What does being a storyteller involve?
Selected storytellers will meet in person with a highly experienced audio producer to tell and record their individual stories through gentle conversation. The conversation can last up to 3 hours after which it will be edited into a short, audio-friendly version of up to 15 minutes.
Where possible, we ask that each storyteller donates a pair of shoes, and together their story and shoes will form part of an existing growing cultural archive and touring exhibition that will allow thousands of visitors to listen while “literally” walking in their shoes.
We are committed to making this process accessible so selected storytellers will;
- Receive £115 for their time and to cover any expenses such as travel and childcare.
- Access support such as a translator, BSL interpretation, wheelchair access, or materials in an alternative format upon request
If needed we are able to provide a pair of shoes in exchange for the donated pair.
“When I told my story, I felt that I was accepted for who I am. I felt that someone was interested in hearing my whole story, not just the bits they like. I have participated in similar initiatives, but with this it was different, they wanted me, not just the parts that suit them. I was able to talk freely without fear of judgement. I was not just one character: I was a refugee, a victim, a hero, a husband, a son, a lover, a dentist, an activist .... I was Yazan. I can confidently say that my experience on this project has boosted my confidence in myself in this new country and community.”
— Yazan, storyteller
Who should you nominate?
Storytellers should live, work, study or volunteer in Haringey, or have another strong connection to the borough.
You are welcome to nominate more than one person, including yourself, and if shortlisted, we will contact the nominated storyteller directly with the name of the person who has nominated them to confirm their interest before taking part in the project.
London Borough of Culture wants to shine a light on the individuals and stories based in or from Haringey including children and young people, (aged 8 years old and up), Disabled people and those who identify as Latine, Black British, African and/or Caribbean, Turkish and/or Kurdish heritage, LGBTQI+
How can you nominate someone?
If you, or someone you know, is connected to Haringey and has a rebel story to share, you can nominate them by completing the Rebel Storyteller Nomination Form.
Please ensure you have the storyteller's permission before nominating them.
If you or the person you are nominating are under 18, you must have the consent and involvement of their parent or carer – you will need to provide their contact details.
Shortlisted storytellers will be contacted directly with the name of the person who has nominated them to confirm their interest and obtain full consent before taking part in the project.
If you have any issues, please contact us at hello@haringeycollective.com
This project is supported by Haringey Council’s Resettlement, Migration and Inequalities team and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
